Self-care Sunday on vacation


Once in a while it’s good to hit that reset button. My personal favorite way of doing this is with a little Sunday evening body and mind self-care so that I start the week nice and refreshed! I find this to be especially important while on vacation, when it’s not always as easy to stay grounded. Like one of my sweet roommates here in Hawaii said to me the other day : Girl, take care of yourself!

Sunset gratitude
Here in Hawaii the sun sets surprisingly early, by 7pm the sun has already dipped passed the horizon. I find it’s the perfect time to take a moment to relax and think about what I’m grateful for today. I try to incorporate this into my routine, to calm down my anxiety and elevate my mood. It’s easier to find beauty in the world when you are soaking in Mother Nature’s inexplicable creativity. Like every day of your life, every sunset is a unique piece of art that should be cherished and enjoyed.

Healthy meals and snacks
Self-care starts from within! I’m quite proud of myself this week, I haven’t splurged on too much fast food and sugary goodies. I think it’s partly because it’s so easy to find quality fruits and vegetables here at the farmer’s markets. They are so perfectly fresh and ripe, it’s impossible to compare to what we have back home! One of the perks of being on vacation in a hostel is that you have both the time and space to make a great meal and try new local recipes, not to mention being able to simply dice up some fresh produce to snack on while on your daily adventures.

My favorite meal lately has been a plate of fresh papaya, mango and lychee combined with my daily vitamins and a nice cup of lavender Matcha latte.


Body care
If like myself you are traveling to a hot destination, you might feel like you are constantly covered in a fun mix of sunscreen, coco butter, aloe and sand. On the plus side, it makes a perfect natural exfoliant… #not.
My skin is also pretty sensitive to pretty much everything, heat included, so even though I applied sunscreen practically every hour I still managed to get a nice sunburn and a heat rash on my face. Lets just say that my skin is in great need of some extra love.

First things first, to get all this gunk off my body I like to use the lavender and poppy seeds soap from Deux Cosmetiques. It gently exfoliates my skin, while the soft fragrance helps me relax. It even comes in the cutest seed paper packaging, which means that it does wonders both for your body and our planet. While cleaning myself I like to think about all the things I want to let go of and release the negative thoughts that no longer serve me. Down the drain they go!

Once I’m nice and clean, I like to reinvigorate my skin with a soothing face mask. I recently got this great one from Schmear and it’s absolutely perfect for bringing on vacation. The small and easy to pack packaging contains enough product to make about 3 face masks, and it’s done wonders for my skin. It looks much clearer and my blemishes are less noticeable.

Evening journaling
While my face mask works its magic, I take a moment to fill out my Creative Wanderer journal with a mix of writing, sketches and scrap-booking. I was inspired by my High school days when every evening I would doodle, glue theater tickets, stickers and write what my highlights of the day was. It helps me wind down and by putting everything down on paper it helps me remember all the highlights of the trip, serving as a great souvenir of the places I’ve visited and the people I’ve met to keep for the years to come.

With that done, I rinse my face and spray it with my lavender mist from Cocooning Love. I love this product so much! It smells wonderful and it’s so refreshing, I always find myself misting my face with it throughout the day. I follow this up with Deux Cosmétique’s lavender serum for a luxurious face massage.

You might have noticed a pattern by now, lavender is one of my favorite fragrances when it comes to self-care, especially in the evening. It’s relaxing and helps lull me to sleep. It’s also good to promote skin renewal and regeneration, which lets be honest I really need at the moment. It’s literally a magical product and it does wonders in and out of the body.

Try local natural treatments
Sometimes your vacation destination has its own treasure trove of natural treatments to offer. Here in Hawaii, what better way to fight a sunburn than using the local Aloe plants to soothe and hydrate your skin! For an added cooling effect, I like to keep the fresh aloe in the refrigerator. Look into the local plants of where you’re staying, you might be surprised at what you’ll find.

Early bed and Meditation
Once I’m all pampered up I’m ready to go to bed! The final step to this routine consists of an early bed time and meditation. Lay down and put one hand on your stomach and the other on your heart. Take the time to close your eyes and focus on your breath. Inhale and exhale, slowing your breathing down with each breath. Clear your mind as best you can and let yourself be carried away in the arms of Morpheus.

I hope this inspires you to take good care of yourself even while traveling. The most important thing to remember is to take some time to relax and enjoy the little moments. What’s the point of going on vacation if you come back more exhausted than when you left?
